Be Present, Be Powerful: Celebrate National Attendance Awareness Month!

Posted Date: 9/11/24 (6:30 PM)

September marks National Attendance Awareness Month, and this year, HBCSD is championing the theme Be Present, Be Powerful. As we kick off a new school year, we're prioritizing the connections between students, staff, families, and the community. Together, we’re building a strong home-school partnership to support student growth and learning. Let’s join forces to ensure students show up every day, ready to learn and thrive!

Why Regular Attendance Matters

Consistent attendance is a key ingredient in student success. Research tells us that students who attend school regularly—starting as early as preschool—are more likely to achieve academically and develop critical skills for life. On the flip side, chronic absenteeism (missing 10% or more of the school year, or about 18 days) can hinder academic progress. Students who are chronically absent often struggle to read proficiently by third grade, face challenges in middle school, and are at greater risk of not graduating high school.

Fostering Belonging for Success

Promoting a sense of belonging is crucial in improving student attendance. We all play a role in creating schools that are safe, healthy, and supportive. Keeping lines of communication open between home and school helps us work together to ensure every student has a successful year.

Tips for Keeping Students Healthy and Ready to Learn

  • Ensure your child gets enough sleep, eats well, and exercises regularly.

  • If you’re unsure whether your child should attend school due to illness, it’s best to keep them home and consult with the school.

Throughout September, HBCSD will continue to share helpful tips and strategies for supporting your child's learning and well-being. Let’s make this a great year!
