    Families as "Observers"

    Family accounts are linked to student profiles, providing a window into the classroom. As an Observer, you can:

    • Note: To maintain academic integrity, Observers cannot submit work on behalf of students.

    Huntington Beach City School District uses Securly to filter and monitor student internet activity on school accounts. Securly Home is the parent-facing side of that tool: a free app that gives you visibility into and control over your child’s online activity whenever they sign in with their HBCSD Google account.

    Because Securly connects to your child’s school credentials, it applies to any device they sign in to, not just a district-issued iPad or Chromebook. Whether your child is on the family computer, a personal tablet, or any other device, if they are logged in with their HBCSD account, Securly Home gives you the tools to see what they’re doing and set boundaries that fit your family.

    Securly Home is free for all HBCSD families and takes less than five minutes to set up.

    What you can do with Securly Home

    Here’s what’s available to you as a parent once your account is set up.

    See what’s happening

    • Review online activity - The Activity Feed shows you a real-time view of your child’s recent searches, websites visited, and videos watched while signed in with their HBCSD account outside of school hours. You can filter by child or content type, and search for specific sites or topics.
    • Daily activity summaries - Stories gives you a curated snapshot of your child’s recent online activity, updated every 24 hours. Swipe through to see highlights at a glance, useful for a quick daily check-in without reviewing the full activity log.
    • Weekly email reports - Securly sends a weekly summary of your child’s account activity directly to your inbox, so you stay informed without having to open the app.

    Set your own rules

    • Schedule offline times - Set time windows when internet access turns off automatically for your child’s account, perfect for dinner, homework focus time, or bedtime. 
    • Customize home rules - Block or allow specific websites and entire content categories whenever your child is signed in with their HBCSD account. You can also enable Google SafeSearch and YouTube Safe Video with a single toggle. 

    Take action

    • Pause internet access - One tap pauses internet access for your child’s account instantly, on any device they’re signed in to. You can pause and unpause at any time. 
    • Opt in to safety notifications - Turn on Flagged Activity alerts to receive a push notification if Securly’s system detects content that may indicate bullying, self-harm, or violence while your child is signed in with their HBCSD account outside of school. 

    Set Up Your Account

    Setup is free and takes less than five minutes. All you need is the email address your child’s school has on file for you.

    Step 1 | Download the app

    Download the free Securly Home app from the App Store (iPhone or iPad) or Google Play (Android).

    Step 2 | Log in with your school email

    Open the app and tap the Login button. Enter the email address HBCSD has on file for you — this is the same address the district uses to contact you. Tap “Get instant access.” (Not sure which email is on file? Contact your school office and they can confirm it.)

    Step 3 | Check your email and confirm

    Securly will send a confirmation link to that address. Open the email on your phone, click the link, and your account is ready. No password required.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

    Does this work on personal devices, or only school-issued ones?

    Securly Home applies to any device where your child is signed in with their HBCSD Google account, not just school-issued iPads or Chromebooks. If your child logs in to a personal laptop, family computer, or any other device using their school credentials, Securly’s filtering and monitoring are active on that device during that session.

    What happens if my child logs out of their HBCSD account?

    Securly’s filtering and monitoring only apply while your child is actively signed in with their HBCSD Google account. If they log out of their school account on a device, the tools in Securly Home will not apply to that device during that session.

    What can the school see versus what can I control?

    The district manages filtering during school hours and sets certain content restrictions that apply at all times; those appear in the app with a school badge and cannot be changed by parents. Everything else in Securly Home- your custom rules, offline schedules, and pause settings- is controlled by you. The school does not see your personal settings.

    What does “flagged activity” mean?

    Securly’s system automatically scans for content that may indicate bullying, self-harm, or violence. When something is flagged, it appears in the Flagged Activities section of your Securly Home app and, if you’ve opted in, triggers a push notification to your phone. Parents receive these alerts directly; you don’t need to wait for the school to notify you. The district may also be notified of certain flagged activity depending on district settings.

    Is Securly Home required, or is it optional?

    Securly Home is optional for parents. The district uses Securly to filter and monitor student accounts as part of our standard internet safety program, but downloading the parent app and setting up an account is your choice. We encourage all families to use it as a free tool to stay connected to your child’s online activity.

    My child has more than one device. Do I need to set anything up separately for each one?

    No. Because Securly Home connects to your child’s HBCSD Google account, not to a specific device, your settings apply wherever your child signs in with their school credentials. You manage everything through one account in the app.

    I set up an account, but I’m not seeing any activity. What should I do?

    Activity only appears in the feed when your child is signed in with their HBCSD Google account on a device and actively browsing. If the feed looks empty, check that your child’s school email is associated correctly with your account and that they are currently signed in on a device.
