The Huntington Beach City School District has received a formal request to name the new Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) building at Sowers Middle School in honor of Bill and Rebbie Bates, former educators at Sowers. Bill Bates taught science for 25 years, and Rebbie Bates taught mathematics for 28 years. Both are remembered by colleagues and former students for their long-standing commitment to education, mentorship, and contributions to school life and the broader community.
In accordance with Board Policy 7310, the District’s Naming Committee is gathering additional input from the community before making a recommendation to the Board of Education. Community perspectives will be considered alongside the request and supporting letters.
We invite you to share your thoughts through the brief survey linked below. The survey will remain open through Wednesday, April 23, 2025.
