Igniting Young Minds to Reach for a Bright Future

Student-Led Tutoring: Empowering Students to Succeed

Posted Date: 1/28/25 (11:00 PM)

As the final bell rings and students flood out of classrooms, eager for the freedom of the afternoon, quieter energy begins to fill the hallways at Dwyer and Sowers Middle Schools. A group of dedicated students chooses to stay behind for a unique opportunity to engage in learning beyond the traditional school day. Whether offering their knowledge as peer tutors or seeking guidance to master subjects, these students gather in spaces transformed into collaboration, mentorship, and academic growth hubs.

Huntington Beach City School District (HBCSD) middle school students take charge of their academic journeys with two tutoring programs: Learning Stars Tutoring at Dwyer Middle School and Viking Study Hall at Sowers Middle School. These initiatives are designed to empower students, boost their confidence, and create a supportive community for growth inside and outside the classroom.

Learning Stars Tutoring is a club founded by two Huntington Beach High School students dedicated to offering free academic support to local youth. This volunteer-based program is committed to helping students reach their full potential across various subjects while also guiding them through extracurricular opportunities, scholarship searches, and developing academic growth plans. Sessions are available in-person at the library three days a week after school, and additional online tutoring options are offered. Students can sign up for tutoring sessions through an online form to schedule their sessions.

Melody C., a founding member of the program and an 11th grader at HBHS, shared that her experiences receiving tutoring inspired her to give back by supporting others who can benefit from the same kind of guidance and encouragement.

"I know how challenging school can feel at times, and I empathize with those struggles because I've been there too," said Melody. "What inspires me most is seeing students improve and gain confidence in their studies—it’s such a rewarding experience to be part of their growth."

Beyond tutoring, Learning Stars is building a giving movement to raise funds for educational programs in underprivileged areas. While the tutoring service is free for all students, Learning Stars plans to host future fundraising events to continue supporting its mission.

On Tuesdays, Viking Study Hall offers a quiet space for focused learning where students can engage with teachers, administrators, and peer tutors. The after-school sessions provide a welcoming environment for students to complete homework, ask questions, and receive support. Individual one-on-one tutoring is also available as part of the program, where a peer tutor works exclusively with a student for the entire study hall session, offering personalized guidance and support. With this dedicated time and resources, Viking Study Hall allows students to connect with their peers and access the help they need to succeed academically.

"Peer tutoring gives students a chance to improve their academics, and the best part is that it’s accessible to everyone so they can be more successful," shared Alex T., a peer tutor at Sowers. "I enjoy helping students with language arts, and it’s been eye-opening to understand the different challenges my peers face. Knowing I can support them and make a difference in their learning feels great."

These student-led programs exemplify the transformative power of peer mentorship, creating meaningful opportunities for growth and connection. Through Learning Stars Tutoring and Viking Study Hall, students strengthen their academic skills and cultivate leadership, confidence, and a deep sense of community. These initiatives reflect our commitment to fostering a school culture where every student can thrive, reshaping the educational experience, and creating a lasting impact that echoes beyond the classroom walls.
