Huntington Beach City School District (HBCSD) proudly announces that Dwyer Middle School has been named a 2025 California School to Watch by the California League of Middle Schools (CLMS). This honor recognizes middle schools for their commitment to academic excellence, social equity, and student-centered innovation. Dwyer is among 90 exemplary California middle schools that support the whole child through strong academics, social-emotional learning (SEL), and forward-thinking programs that foster student success.
Dwyer’s journey to earning this award involved extensive collaboration among faculty, staff, parents, and district leaders. The school engaged in a rigorous self-study process using the Schools to Watch rubric, which evaluates a school’s systems, strengths, and areas for growth. Teachers, administrators, and educational partners worked together to analyze data, assess programs, and ensure that Dwyer’s initiatives aligned with its mission to serve all students equitably, especially those from historically underserved backgrounds.
"Receiving the Schools to Watch award is a testament to our team’s dedication to improving every student’s experience at Dwyer," said Principal Dr. Christa Glembocki. "This honor showcases the hard work we’ve put into building a supportive, inclusive school environment that prioritizes academic and social-emotional growth."
Dwyer is known for its holistic approach, which ensures that students feel supported both inside and outside the classroom. The school’s Live and Learn with GRIT program instills core values—Gratitude, Responsibility, Integrity, and Tenacity—while their Wellness Center provides a safe space for students to access counseling, small-group workshops, and mindfulness activities. At the same time, academic interventions and zero-period elective offerings ensure that all learners have access to enrichment and support without sacrificing their interests.
Beyond academics, Dwyer is home to an award-winning music and arts program, with students earning state and national distinction for their performances and creative achievements. As an Academy for the Performing Arts Junior (APA Jr.) school, Dwyer offers an exceptional foundation in vocal and instrumental music, theater, and visual arts, preparing students for advanced opportunities at the high school level. The school’s robust student leadership programs, including ASB and the National Junior Honor Society, empower students to develop leadership skills, engage in service projects, and foster a strong sense of school pride.
The Schools to Watch commendation is not just about achievement—it also recognizes Dwyer’s commitment to continuous improvement.
"The self-study process helped us reflect on what we do well and what we can build upon," said Dr. Glembocki. "It was a true team effort that engaged every member of our school community."
Dwyer’s recognition was celebrated at the California Schools to Watch Ceremony in Monterey earlier this month. The HBCSD Board of Trustees will honor Dwyer at the May 20th Board meeting.
