Dwyer Middle School Awarded California Distinguished School Status

Posted Date: 3/06/24 (5:00 PM)

State Superintendent Tony Thurmond announced that Huntington Beach City School District’s Dwyer Middle School earned the California Distinguished School distinction—the highest level of school recognition in the state.

Administered by the California Department of Education (CDE), the California Distinguished Schools program identifies schools that excel in two areas: narrowing the achievement gap and achieving exceptional student performance. Selection criteria heavily rely on data from the 2023 California School Dashboard, emphasizing outstanding student performance in English and math and low suspension rates.

The awards, which alternate between elementary and secondary institutions annually, bestow the esteemed title upon each school that earns the distinction for two years.

"Dwyer is thrilled to be among the distinguished schools across Orange County and statewide. Our focus on meeting the needs of all students and promoting academic growth is at the heart of our core values and educational mission,” said Dwyer Principal Dr. Christa Glembocki. “We are so proud and honored to celebrate this accomplishment and continue our journey towards excellence in education,” she said.

Dwyer is among the 38 schools recognized in Orange County and one of 293 nationwide to earn this esteemed honor.

"We are immensely proud of Dwyer for achieving the prestigious distinction,” said Superintendent Dr. Leisa Winston. “This recognition underscores our commitment to providing exceptional education and support to all students and truly highlights the dedication of our educators and staff."

Dwyer has underscored proactive behavior measures through its comprehensive schoolwide reinforcement system, "Jr. Oilers Live and Learn with GRIT," which promotes positive behavior and underscores values like Gratitude, Responsibility, Integrity, and Tenacity (GRIT). Social-emotional learning campaigns and strategic communication efforts have also enhanced attendance. The steadfast commitment to delivering individualized support within the classroom has been pivotal in the school's growth and recognition.

Dwyer Middle School will be celebrated at a ceremony at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim on May 3, 2024.
